Perfecting Your Powder
putting the “pow” in Powder
The powder room: a toilet room for your guests. How bland does that sound? Do you want your guests to walk into the room and only notice the toilet? Or do you want them to be able to admire what’s around them and truly feel like they are a guest in your house? Powder rooms give you the chance to make a statement; one that either accentuates the rest of your home’s design or one that is completely different from the rest of the vibe. Throw an animal print on the walls to add a funky pattern, or find a free-formed mirror with a textured frame; simple tweaks can make a huge difference. Put the POW in powder!
Check out the four different ways we elevate the aesthetic of our guest’s chambers:
WALLCOVERINGS
You want to choose a wallcovering that is unique but timeless, no matter what style of home you have. Small prints and bold prints are great for smaller powder rooms; they make a statement, but not an overwhelming one. If you want to cover more space, a neutral wallpaper with simple and clean design is the way to go.
Paint
Some people are scared of wallcoverings (I promise you, it won’t look like your grandma’s home in the 1950s). If that is the case for you, a fun paint color will work just as well. You want to either choose a bold color that can stand alone and make a space its own, or a neutral color that can disappear in the background of thoughtfully accessorized sconces and mirrors. The key is creating balance between your walls and what’s hung on them.
Lighting
Arguably the most important aspect of a powder room. Why take the time to put thought into the walls if you’re going to abandon the lighting? If your powder room has a lot of natural light, focus on decorative scones to add character and an artistic element. If it’s a dark powder room, take advantage of this opportunity to create a moody moment with sculptural sconces and low lighting. The lighting establishes the entire aura of the powder.
MirrorS
Let this be your focal point in your powder, not the toilet. Have some fun with the shape, color, and texture! When your guests look at themselves, they’re also looking at the mirror. Do you want them staring into a plain rectangle or do you want them to have a photo opp for a mirror selfie?? You are creating an experience for your guests, make it a good one.
